How to Reset a GMC Sierra Screen: Frozen or Black Display
Troubleshoot a frozen or black GMC Sierra center screen, use the Google built-in reboot correctly, and distinguish display faults from radio problems.
If your GMC Sierra center screen has Google built-in, put the truck in Park and hold the steering-wheel End Call button for about 20 seconds until the display turns off. Let it restart before touching the controls again. GMC limits this reboot method to vehicles equipped with Google built-in.
For another infotainment system, follow its own manual. “Sierra screen” can refer to the center display, instrument cluster, or head-up display; they should not all receive the same reset advice.
Identify which screen is malfunctioning
| Display | Location | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Center infotainment screen | Middle of the dashboard | Black, frozen, delayed, or touch not responding |
| Instrument cluster | Behind the steering wheel | Missing speed, warning information, or gauges |
| Head-up display | Projected onto the windshield, if fitted | Missing, faint, or incorrectly positioned image |
This guide concerns the center infotainment display. If essential instruments are unavailable, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis rather than assuming an entertainment-system reboot will address the problem.
For a missing windshield image, use the separate Sierra head-up display guide.
Use the supported Google built-in reboot
Park safely, hold End Call until the center display shuts off, and allow the welcome screen to return. Ignore any service menu that appears while holding the button. Source: GMC center-display reboot instructions.
Do not interrupt an explicitly displayed software-installation process to perform a speculative reset. Follow the instructions shown by the vehicle for that update.
Once the interface returns, check whether the same screen or function fails again. A single successful restart tells you the display recovered; it does not identify the original cause.
Troubleshoot by what still works
Frozen image, but sound continues
Write down the app or screen that was open when it froze. If the failure occurs only after connecting one phone, test the system with that phone disconnected after restarting. That helps isolate the trigger without deleting all settings.
Black display, but audio still plays
Check whether the display has been switched off through its normal controls. Use a familiar Home or display control if your system has one. Compare the behavior in daylight and darkness, and note whether the screen shows any startup logo.
A black panel with working audio does not automatically mean the whole radio is dead. Display power, backlighting, and software are different possibilities that require diagnosis.
No screen and no audio
Check whether the vehicle starts normally and whether other electronics behave as expected. Multiple electrical symptoms are useful evidence for a technician. Do not assume the screen itself is the first part to replace.
Screen works, but touch input does not
Clean and dry the surface using the approved method, then test basic menus while parked. Remove a recently installed screen protector if it appears to interfere and its instructions permit removal. If physical controls still work, report that distinction.
For systems without Google built-in
Use a normal shutdown and restart as an initial check, and consult the correct GMC owner’s manual or infotainment guide for system-specific instructions. A model year alone may not identify the fitted radio.
Do not assume that holding Home, Power, or two unrelated buttons will perform the same action on every generation. Also avoid fuse advice that omits the vehicle year and fuse-box location.
When a factory reset will not help
A settings reset does not repair a cracked display, loose connection, failed backlight, or underlying power fault. It can also erase useful preferences while leaving the original problem untouched.
Consider data erasure only when the interface is accessible, the intended reset option is clearly described, and you understand what will be deleted. A screen that repeatedly goes black deserves diagnosis even if restarting temporarily restores it.
What to document before a service visit
Record when the fault occurs, outside conditions, connected devices, recent software updates, and whether the camera image appears normally. Photograph the symptom only while safely parked. Avoid clearing diagnostic information through improvised electrical resets before the technician has a chance to investigate.
If the rear-camera image is unavailable, do not rely on the screen when reversing; use direct observation, mirrors, and assistance as appropriate until the fault is resolved.
Frequently asked questions
Is a screen reboot the same as a factory reset?
No. Rebooting restarts software; a factory reset can erase preferences and personal data.
Why does the screen freeze only with my phone connected?
That pattern suggests testing the phone connection, cable where used, and phone software. It does not by itself prove either device is defective.
