How to Program a GMC Sierra Garage Door Opener?
Most GMC Sierra trucks use the built-in HomeLink system for garage door programming. The process is usually the same across 2014–2026 Sierra models.
How to Program a GMC Sierra Garage Door Opener?
Step 1: Clear Existing Programming (Optional but Recommended)
Inside the truck:
- Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons simultaneously.
- Keep holding for about 10–20 seconds until the indicator light flashes rapidly.
- Release the buttons.
This clears old garage door codes from the system.

Step 2: Train the Sierra Using Your Garage Remote
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off).
- Hold your garage door remote about 1–3 inches from the HomeLink buttons.
- Press and hold:
- the HomeLink button you want to use
- AND the button on your handheld garage remote
Keep holding both buttons until the HomeLink light changes from:
- slow blinking → rapid blinking or solid
This usually takes 10–30 seconds.
Step 3: Test the Button
Press the programmed HomeLink button.
If the garage door opens/closes:
You are done.
If it does NOT work:
Your opener likely uses a rolling code system, which most modern garage openers use.

Step 4: Press the “Learn” Button on the Garage Opener
Go to the garage motor unit mounted on the ceiling.
Find and press the:
- Learn
- Smart
- or Program
button once.
You usually have about 30 seconds for the next step.
Step 5: Return to the Truck
Inside the Sierra:
- Press and hold the programmed HomeLink button for about 2 seconds.
- Release.
- Repeat 2–3 times if needed.
The garage door should respond after one of the presses.
Common Problems
Genie Openers
Some Genie systems require:
- Training with the handheld remote first
- Pressing the opener’s program button
- Pressing the vehicle HomeLink button several times
This workaround is common on newer Genie units.
Weak Remote Battery
A weak battery in the handheld remote can prevent programming.
Replace the battery before attempting setup.
Still Not Working?
Try:
- holding the remote closer or farther away
- repeatedly pressing the remote button instead of holding continuously
- clearing HomeLink and starting over
Some garage door systems are sensitive to signal timing.
