How to Remote Start a GMC Sierra: Key Fob and App

Learn how to remote start an equipped GMC Sierra using the key fob or myGMC app, take over driving, and diagnose common remote-start failures.

An equipped GMC Sierra can be remote-started with its factory key fob or, when the vehicle and service plan support it, the myGMC app. On many Sierra factory remotes, the sequence is to press Lock and then hold the curved-arrow remote-start button until the vehicle responds. The exact sequence and hold time depend on the model year and remote, so match the instructions in your manual.

Remote start is separate from push-button starting inside the cab. Having a Start/Stop button or power door locks does not alone establish that factory remote start is installed.

Before you start

Make sure the truck is parked outdoors in an open area, in Park, with the hood closed. Never remote-start a combustion-engine truck inside a garage or other enclosed space. Check that the exhaust outlet is clear of snow or other blockage.

Identify whether the system is factory-installed or aftermarket. A separate aftermarket remote may use a completely different button sequence, runtime, and takeover procedure.

For the factory system, obtain the instructions under “Remote Vehicle Start” in your GMC model-year owner’s manual. Do not assume that a procedure for another GMC model applies unchanged.

Remote start with the key fob

For a factory remote whose manual specifies the Lock-then-hold sequence:

  1. Stand within working range of the truck.
  2. Press and release Lock.
  3. Immediately press and hold the remote-start button, marked with a curved arrow, for the time specified in the manual.
  4. Watch for the vehicle’s confirmation and engine start.
  5. Release the button once the start is confirmed.

Some GM remotes and generations use a different action, including two presses of the remote-start button. Follow your remote’s instructions if they differ. Repeatedly trying mixed sequences makes it harder to tell a timing error from a genuine fault.

Range depends on the environment. If the truck does not respond, move closer and try from a clear location before assuming the system needs repair.

Remote start with the myGMC app

Sign in to the GM account linked to the truck and select the correct vehicle. If remote commands are supported, use the Start or Climate control on the home screen and follow any confirmation prompt. GMC’s current instructions say tapping the control again can cancel the command on equipped vehicles. Source: GMC remote-command instructions.

App layout and available commands vary with the vehicle, service plan, and app version. If you have multiple GM vehicles, verify the selected vehicle before sending a command. GMC’s app setup guide explains account linking and vehicle selection.

The app needs connectivity and an eligible active service arrangement. The factory fob uses a different communication path, so successful fob operation does not prove app connectivity is working.

Getting in and driving away

Remote starting warms or cools the truck; it does not replace normal driver authorization. Bring the recognized key or fob, unlock the vehicle, and complete the normal start procedure specified for that ignition system before shifting.

For a push-button system, this generally means using the brake pedal and Start/Stop control with the fob present. A keyed ignition has its own takeover instructions. Use the truck’s manual, especially if an aftermarket system has been fitted.

Do not expect unlimited runtime. Runtime, extension rules, and the number of starts permitted before a normal ignition cycle differ by system and year.

Why remote start may not work

If the truck also starts poorly from the driver’s seat, investigate that starting problem first. A remote-start reset is not a substitute for diagnosing low battery voltage or an engine fault.

Frequently asked questions

Does key-fob remote start require the app subscription?

Factory fob operation is separate from app-based connected services. App remote commands depend on vehicle and plan eligibility.

Can I add remote start by buying a different fob?

A fob alone does not establish compatibility. Have the vehicle’s hardware, software, and supported accessory options checked first.

Will remote start turn on heated seats?

That depends on equipment, settings, and operating conditions. Check the remote-start climate and comfort instructions for your model rather than assuming the seat indicator will behave the same as during normal driving.
