How to Reset a GMC Sierra Radio and Fix Audio Problems
Reset a GMC Sierra radio with the correct system-specific method, troubleshoot missing sound and Bluetooth, and understand when a factory reset helps.
For a GMC Sierra with Google built-in, park the truck and hold the steering-wheel End Call button for about 20 seconds until the center display switches off, then let it reboot. This is a software restart. It is not a universal procedure for every Sierra radio and is different from erasing the system’s settings.
If the screen works but there is no sound, first test the audio source and volume. A reset cannot repair an expired subscription, a damaged speaker, or a phone that is not sending audio to the truck.
Choose the reset that matches the problem
| Symptom or goal | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Menus work, but one station or source is silent | Try another station or source |
| Bluetooth audio fails, but FM works | Troubleshoot the phone connection |
| Google built-in system is frozen or behaving erratically | Use the supported End Call reboot |
| Older radio without Google built-in | Use its model-specific manual; try a normal shutdown and restart |
| Removing personal information before sale | Review the system’s factory-reset or data-erasure options |
The last two actions are not interchangeable. Rebooting aims to restore operation; erasing data aims to remove stored information.
Reboot a Sierra with Google built-in
With the vehicle stationary in Park, hold End Call on the steering wheel for approximately 20 seconds. Keep holding if a service screen appears; do not choose an option there. Release once the center display turns off and allow it to restart. GMC says the welcome screen normally follows after about 5–10 seconds. Source: GMC’s Google built-in troubleshooting procedure.
Afterward, test the original symptom once. Try a local radio station before reconnecting a phone so that you can distinguish a vehicle problem from a phone-connection problem.
What to do with an older Sierra radio
Identify the system using your model-year owner’s manual and infotainment guides. Do not use a button combination merely because it worked on a different GMC.
A normal vehicle shutdown and restart is a reasonable first troubleshooting attempt. Park, switch the vehicle off, open the driver’s door to end retained accessory operation where applicable, and allow the vehicle to shut down before restarting. Avoid repeatedly opening doors or sending app commands while waiting.
There is no single universal waiting period or radio-fuse number for every Sierra. If the manual specifies a particular procedure, follow it.
If the screen works but the radio has no sound
Work through one variable at a time:
- Select a known source. Try a local FM station instead of a streaming app.
- Check mute and volume. Adjust volume while that source is actually playing.
- Inspect balance and fade. Sound may have been directed away from occupied seats.
- Disconnect the phone. Check whether audio returns without Bluetooth or phone projection.
- Compare sources. If every source is silent, note whether calls, prompts, and other sounds are also affected.
These checks do not prove a component has failed. They give a technician a clearer description and can prevent unnecessary data erasure.
If only Bluetooth audio is affected
Confirm that the phone is sending media to the Sierra, not to earbuds or another device. Restart the phone and try again. If pairing remains unreliable, remove the vehicle pairing on the phone and the phone pairing in the truck, then pair them again while parked.
Record whether the fault affects calling, music, or both. A pairing that supports calls but not media needs different investigation from a radio that produces no sound from any source.
When a factory reset makes sense
If the interface is usable, review the reset choices in Settings and read the confirmation screen. Depending on the system, options may reset preferences, remove personal data, or erase paired devices. Menu names and what gets deleted vary.
Save anything you need before confirming. A factory reset is more disruptive than rebooting and should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for hardware or wiring faults.
Avoid disconnecting the battery or pulling random fuses as the first radio fix. Those actions affect more than the entertainment system and can complicate diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Will rebooting delete radio presets?
A reboot normally restarts software rather than intentionally erasing stored settings. A factory-reset option can remove data; read its confirmation text.
Why does the problem return after a reset?
A recurring fault may require software, power-supply, wiring, or component diagnosis. Note the frequency, active source, connected phone, and any recent work.
What if the display itself is black?
