How Long Is a GMC Sierra 1500? Cab, Bed, and Garage Fit

Learn how Sierra 1500 cab and bed choices affect overall length, how to measure garage clearance, and why bed length is different from wheelbase.

Many recent GMC Sierra 1500 configurations are approximately 211–242 inches long—about 17 feet 7 inches to 20 feet 2 inches. Treat those as rounded planning figures, not universal dimensions for every year and trim. Cab style, bed length, bumpers, and accessories determine whether a particular truck fits your space.

If garage clearance is tight, get the exact model-year dimension and measure the truck itself before committing. A few inches matter more than a rounded internet figure.

How cab and bed combinations affect length

GMC’s 2026 lineup includes Regular Cab trucks with standard or long beds, Double Cab trucks with a standard bed, and Crew Cab configurations with short or standard beds, subject to trim and drivetrain availability. Source: GMC Sierra 1500 cab and bed configurations.

ConfigurationWhat to consider when comparing length
Regular Cab, standard bedUsually the shortest modern Sierra 1500 body combination
Regular Cab, long bedMore bed floor without adding a second seating row
Double Cab, standard bedRear seating plus the standard cargo bed
Crew Cab, short bedLarger passenger compartment paired with a shorter bed
Crew Cab, standard bedCombines the larger cabin and longer available Crew Cab bed

Do not assume “Crew Cab” gives the full answer. Two Crew Cabs can have different beds. Likewise, a shorter cabin does not guarantee a shorter overall truck if it is paired with a longer bed.

Overall length, bed length, and wheelbase are different

Overall length is the front-to-rear exterior dimension. It is the first number to check for a garage or parking bay.

Bed length describes the cargo box. Measure the interior floor between the bulkhead and the closed tailgate when comparing usable cargo space or identifying an accessory application.

Wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axle centers. It helps describe the chassis layout, but it is not the truck’s total length. The body extends beyond both axles.

Also distinguish bed length from bed volume. Cubic feet describe three-dimensional storage capacity, not how long a board can lie flat on the floor.

Will a Sierra 1500 fit in a 20-foot garage?

Possibly, but the nominal garage size is not enough information. Twenty feet equals 240 inches. That does not leave 240 inches of usable clearance if cabinets, steps, shelving, or the closed door occupy part of the space.

Consider this illustrative measurement:

  • Usable depth with the door closed: 240 inches.
  • Measured truck length: 232 inches.
  • Total remaining clearance: 8 inches.

Eight inches must cover both the front and rear gaps. It also leaves little flexibility for imperfect parking or protruding accessories. This example illustrates the calculation; it is not a specification for a particular Sierra trim.

A longer garage bay may still have a restrictive door opening. Check height and mirror clearance independently.

Measure garage fit in five steps

  1. Close the garage door and measure usable depth to the nearest obstruction.
  2. Measure the truck’s actual front-to-rear envelope, including accessories that remain attached.
  3. Decide how much walking or unloading space you need at each end.
  4. Check roof height, antenna clearance, mirror width, and the garage-door travel path.
  5. Test fit the actual vehicle before buying when clearance is marginal.

An open tailgate needs additional space beyond the closed-truck dimension. A hitch-mounted carrier can also change the parking envelope substantially. If you routinely load in the garage, measure that operating setup rather than only the parked truck.

For original dimensions and body drawings, start with the correct model year in GM’s body-builder reference collection. Match the model code and configuration instead of assuming one drawing covers every Sierra.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD the same length?

Not necessarily. HD trucks have their own cab, bed, chassis, and body dimensions. Use the exact 2500 HD or 3500 HD specifications when comparing them.

Does a lift kit make the truck longer?

A suspension lift primarily changes height, but the completed build may also include bumpers, tires, or other equipment that changes clearance. Measure the finished vehicle.

Should I buy a tonneau cover using overall truck length?

No. Covers are matched to the model-year application, bed length, and bed construction. See our Sierra 1500 tonneau cover guide.
