How Much Can a GMC Sierra 1500 Tow? Ratings Explained
See the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 maximum towing configuration, understand payload and tongue weight, and calculate whether your truck fits your trailer.
The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,300 pounds in a specific properly equipped configuration. GMC identifies that maximum with a Double Cab, two-wheel drive, standard bed, the available 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel, Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels and tires. It is not the rating for every Sierra 1500. Source: GMC’s 2026 Sierra 1500 towing FAQ.
Your truck’s actual allowance depends on model year, engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, equipment, hitch system, and the load carried in the truck.
Why the maximum advertised rating may not apply
Two trucks with the same engine can have different towing ratings. Equipment such as axle configuration, cooling, and the trailering package matters. A receiver hitch or tow/haul button does not by itself establish that a truck has the maximum-rated configuration.
Similarly, a higher-priced trim is not automatically the strongest tow vehicle. Passenger comfort, off-road capability, and maximum trailer capacity involve different equipment priorities.
Before choosing a trailer, identify the truck you own—or the VIN of the one you plan to buy—rather than working backward from the largest number in an advertisement.
The limits that matter
| Rating or measurement | What it limits |
|---|---|
| Maximum trailer weight | Loaded trailer weight for the rated configuration |
| GVWR | Loaded truck weight |
| GAWR | Weight carried by each truck axle |
| GCWR | Combined loaded truck and trailer weight |
| Occupant-and-cargo allowance | People, cargo, added equipment, and applicable hitch load |
| Receiver and hitch ratings | Permitted trailer and tongue loads for the hitch setup |
| Tire ratings | Load supported by the tires at the specified conditions |
All relevant limits must be satisfied. Passing one check does not cancel the others.
For example, the truck may have enough advertised trailer capacity but too little remaining payload for a family, camping gear, and a heavy trailer tongue.
Calculate remaining payload before buying a trailer
Use your truck’s occupant-and-cargo label, then subtract the loads you add. Consider this illustrative example, not a factory rating:
| Load | Weight |
|---|---|
| Label allowance | 1,700 lb |
| Occupants | −500 lb |
| Bed cargo | −200 lb |
| Added accessories | −100 lb |
| Hitch hardware | −75 lb |
| Remaining allowance for tongue load | 825 lb |
GMC describes conventional trailer tongue weight as roughly 10–15% of loaded trailer weight. Source: GMC Sierra trailering guidance.
At an assumed 12% tongue weight, a 7,000-pound loaded trailer would place about 840 pounds on the hitch. In this example, that is already more than the 825-pound remainder, even before checking axle and receiver limits.
Do not reduce tongue weight below the trailer manufacturer’s requirement to make the arithmetic fit. Change the load, trailer, or tow vehicle instead.
Use loaded trailer weight, not dry weight
A trailer’s advertised dry weight can omit the cargo and supplies you actually tow. Water, propane, batteries, food, tools, and personal gear can materially change the total and its distribution.
When shopping, compare the trailer’s permitted loaded weight and expected real travel weight with your truck’s limits. Once equipped, verify the combination on suitable scales. Record truck axle loads, trailer axle loads, and the configuration of any weight-distributing hitch.
Avoid double-counting tongue weight when calculating combined scale weight: with the combination coupled, that load is already supported by the truck’s axles.
How to find your Sierra’s specific rating
- Record the model year and complete configuration.
- Review the truck’s labels, including the Trailering Information label where fitted.
- Consult the matching owner’s manual and trailering information.
- Confirm the hitch and brake equipment required for your trailer.
- Weigh the loaded combination and compare every relevant limit.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Sierra 1500 tow a travel trailer?
Yes, when the loaded trailer, hitch load, truck load, and required equipment fit the individual vehicle’s ratings. The label “travel trailer” alone says nothing about whether a particular model is suitable.
Can it tow a fifth-wheel trailer?
Some configurations can, but pin weight, hitch weight, bed clearance, and the correct manufacturer rating require careful checking. Do not apply the maximum conventional-towing number to a fifth-wheel setup.
Will airbags or stronger springs increase the tow rating?
They do not by themselves revise the manufacturer’s GVWR, axle ratings, or maximum trailer rating. Improved ride height is not the same as additional rated capacity.
Does towing capacity stay the same across model years?
No. Use the guide for the truck’s actual year and configuration. The 2026 headline figure should not be assigned to an older Sierra.
