Can Sprinter Vans Go Through Drive-Through?
Check whether a Sprinter fits a garage or drive-through using actual roof height, mirror width, turning room, and clearance along the entire route.
A Sprinter can use a garage or drive-through only when its measured height, width, length, and turning path fit the entire route. Many passenger-car garages and covered drive-through lanes cannot accommodate one.
Measure the vehicle you are actually driving
Roof height labels are not clearance measurements. Roof fans, air conditioners, racks, solar panels, antennas, and suspension changes can make the finished van taller than a stock brochure figure.
Measure on level ground to the highest fixed point, with normal tire pressure and the vehicle in a representative condition. Record the result in both feet-and-inches and inches. Place a visible reminder where the driver can read it before approaching a height restriction.
As an example, Mercedes-Benz lists some 2026 cargo configurations at approximately 100 inches for a standard roof and 107 inches for a high roof. Those examples are already above an eight-foot opening. Other configurations differ. Use the exact specifications as a starting point, then measure the finished vehicle.
Check beyond the first clearance bar
A route can contain lower pipes, lights, signs, ramps, or canopies after the entrance. Inclines can change the clearance between the roof and an overhead object. Clearance equal to your measured height leaves no practical margin for these variations.
Width matters too. Compare mirror width with gates and columns. Watch rear-wheel tracking and rear-body swing on a narrow bend. Folding mirrors does not make an unsuitable lane safe to use.
Better options for common destinations
- Ask hotels for open-air oversized parking before arrival.
- Use walk-in or curbside ordering when a restaurant’s covered lane is too low.
- Ask airports where tall vans may collect passengers.
- For a home garage, measure the open door, tracks, interior ceiling, and approach slope.
A garage advertised with a certain door size may have less usable clearance when the door is open.
What to do when clearance is uncertain
Stop before committing to a lane where you cannot turn around. Ask the operator about the full route and use another entrance or parking area when necessary. Do not use a hanging bar as a test device or assume a previous van’s successful passage proves this van will fit.
Drive-through lanes have more than one obstacle
Consider the ordering canopy, signs, payment window roof, and exit turn as separate restrictions. A tall entry does not prove the rest of the lane is suitable. Use curbside pickup or walk inside when the full route cannot be confirmed before entering.
