Where Is The Gas Tank On A Mercedes Sprinter Van?

Find a Sprinter fuel filler near the driver’s door, distinguish it from the underbody tank and DEF reservoir, and verify fuel type before filling.

On many U.S. left-hand-drive Sprinters, the fuel filler is on the left side near the driver’s door, and the door must be opened to access the flap. The fuel tank itself sits beneath the vehicle. Confirm the arrangement for your model year.

Finding the filler rather than the tank

Drivers usually need the filling point, not access to the tank. Look beside the driver’s door for the fuel flap. The 2010 Sprinter operating manual illustrates the left-side filler and door-access arrangement; later or specialized vehicles should be checked against their own instructions.

If a rental’s flap does not open as expected, ask the provider or consult the manual. Do not pry it open or assume it uses the same release as your car.

Check the fuel label before filling

Many Sprinters use diesel, but gasoline versions exist among older vehicles. Read the vehicle’s label and the pump label rather than relying on handle color or a generic rental description.

The eSprinter is electric and has a charging connection instead of an engine fuel requirement. Conversion equipment may also introduce separate fillers, so identify each opening clearly.

Keep diesel and DEF separate

A DEF reservoir is not the fuel tank. Its filling point can differ by model and body. Never pour DEF into the diesel filler, and never use a tank opening merely because its cap looks familiar.

If incorrect fluid is added, stop and obtain assistance before operating the vehicle. Starting can circulate contamination and increase the repair required.

At the pump

Park with sufficient space for the doors and other vehicles, switch off as directed, and follow the manufacturer’s filling instructions. Avoid overfilling beyond the prescribed stopping point. Replace the cap and close the flap before driving away.

For a new-to-you van, locate the filler, confirm fuel type, and learn the range display before the first long journey. Doing that in daylight at pickup is easier than learning it at a crowded station with little fuel remaining.
