Which Sprinter Van Is The Biggest?

Identify the longest Sprinter cargo body and compare overall length, wheelbase, cargo volume, payload, and the tradeoffs of an extended van.

Among current U.S. enclosed Sprinter cargo bodies, the 170-inch extended version is the longest, at approximately 290 inches overall in listed configurations. Biggest cargo volume and highest payload are separate questions, so specify which kind of size matters.

Extended body does not mean a longer wheelbase

The 170-inch standard and extended bodies can share the same axle spacing while differing in rear overhang. That extra body length creates more cargo room but also affects parking, rear swing, and clearance over steep transitions.

Mercedes-Benz lists approximately 234 inches overall for a 144-inch body, 274 inches for a 170-inch body, and 290 inches for a 170-inch extended body in its current U.S. cargo range. Check the exact configuration.

A heavier-duty model number does not automatically mean a longer body. Dual rear wheels can also reduce the width available between wheel housings.

Check the practical tradeoffs

Measure the places where the vehicle will live and work. An extended van can be awkward in a driveway, crowded campground, or loading area even when its cargo space is ideal.

For a conversion, the extra floor area can encourage extra equipment. Keep a weight budget so added cabinets and water do not consume the capacity needed for people and supplies.

Do you need the longest version?

Choose the extended body when the required layout or cargo demonstrably needs it. If the same work fits a shorter van, the shorter vehicle may be easier to use every day.

Cab-chassis vehicles with specialist bodies form a different comparison. Use the finished body’s dimensions and certification instead of applying enclosed cargo-van measurements to a motorhome or box body.
