When Did Freightliner Stop Making Sprinter Vans?

Learn when Freightliner Sprinter production ended, why model year differs from sale date, and what used buyers should check for parts and service.

The Freightliner-badged Sprinter was discontinued after the 2021 model year. That ended the Freightliner-branded offering, not the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicle family.

Discontinued badge does not mean discontinued platform

Freightliner Sprinters share the Sprinter lineage. The Sprinter history overview records the Freightliner version’s conclusion after model year 2021. Mercedes-Benz continues to publish specifications for its own Sprinter range.

For a used buyer, the important distinction is between the selling badge and the specific chassis and engine. Shared lineage does not mean every component from every Sprinter year interchanges.

Why you may see a later sale date

Model year, production date, retail sale date, and first registration date are different. A van built for one model year can remain in inventory or be converted into an RV before its first sale. A listing date is therefore not reliable evidence of continued production.

Read the VIN data, title, and any converter’s label together. Resolve discrepancies before paying a deposit or ordering parts.

Can a Freightliner Sprinter still be serviced?

Service depends on the shop, the van’s age and configuration, and parts availability. Contact the intended service center with the VIN rather than assuming any Freightliner or Mercedes-Benz location will take the job.

Ask about diagnostic support, recall handling, maintenance parts, and body repairs. If traveling extensively, identify more than one suitable shop and understand recovery options for the van’s height and weight.

What matters most in a used purchase

Request records for the engine, transmission, emissions system, and previous repairs. On a camper, inspect the conversion separately for water intrusion, electrical work, and weight distribution. A discontinued badge may affect search results and buyer familiarity, but it does not substitute for a mechanical assessment.

Use Mercedes-Benz’s manual archive as a reference point while confirming that any instructions apply to the actual Freightliner-badged vehicle. Keep the correct VIN and documents with the van so a future owner or shop can identify it accurately.
