How Much Would It Cost to Convert a Sprinter Van?
Plan Sprinter conversion costs with an itemized budget, chassis-versus-build distinction, DIY labor, contingency, weight limits, and builder documentation.
Sprinter conversion cost depends on the layout, labor, materials, systems, and whether the price includes the van. A removable weekend setup and a professionally built full-time camper should not be treated as the same project.
Split the project into clear components
Budget the base vehicle separately from insulation and finishing, furniture, electrical systems, water, heating and cooling, windows, ventilation, and approved travel seats. Add design, installation, delivery, and applicable transaction costs.
A builder’s starting package may exclude several of the systems shown in its promotional photos. Request an itemized specification and identify who supplies each component.
A hypothetical conversion-only budget
| Category | Example |
|---|---|
| Interior and cabinetry | $12,000 |
| Electrical equipment | $8,000 |
| Water and plumbing | $3,000 |
| Windows, ventilation, and heating | $7,000 |
| Labor and design | $20,000 |
| Contingency | $5,000 |
| Conversion total, excluding van | $55,000 |
These are invented planning figures, not a typical-price claim. Replace them with quotes for the actual system specifications. Add the van price to calculate the completed project.
DIY does not mean zero labor cost
DIY can reduce paid labor but requires tools, workspace, skills, time, and inspection where applicable. Mistakes can create rework or make service access difficult. Electrical, fuel, structural, and passenger-seat work deserve appropriately qualified design and installation.
Include the value of your time when comparing DIY with a professional builder, especially if construction delays affect paid work or travel.
Track weight alongside money
A generous equipment budget can produce an overweight van. Estimate component masses, water, passengers, and luggage, then compare with vehicle and axle limits. Weigh the finished vehicle in travel condition.
Review Mercedes-Benz’s upfitting information and obtain the builder’s drawings, equipment manuals, and warranty terms. Define milestones and change-order pricing before construction.
The most useful conversion budget describes a specific, feasible layout. A single headline number without the van, equipment list, or labor scope cannot reliably tell you what the finished camper will cost.
