Can Sprinter Vans Tow?
Learn Sprinter towing limits, 5,000 versus 7,500-pound configurations, tongue weight, and how loaded van weight affects trailer capacity.
Properly equipped Sprinter vans can tow, but the permitted trailer weight is configuration-specific. Current U.S. examples include 5,000-pound and 7,500-pound ratings; the higher figure does not apply to every Sprinter.
Find the rating for your exact van
Start with the VIN equipment data, certification labels, owner’s manual, and hitch label. Mercedes-Benz lists 7,500 pounds for certain heavier-duty cargo configurations, including a 2026 4500 example, while many 2500 configurations are listed at 5,000 pounds. Check the individual configuration.
A fitted receiver is not proof that the van has every required towing component. Verify the wiring, permitted hitch setup, brake-control requirements, and any factory equipment conditions.
Four limits can control the answer
- Trailer rating: The vehicle’s maximum permitted trailer weight for its configuration.
- Combined rating: The maximum permitted weight of van and trailer together.
- Van and axle ratings: Passengers, equipment, and trailer tongue weight still load the van.
- Hitch and component ratings: The receiver, ball mount, ball, and coupler must each be suitable.
The lowest applicable limit governs. Do not increase a manufacturer’s limit by installing a stronger aftermarket hitch.
A worked combined-weight example
Suppose a hypothetical van has a 15,000-pound combined rating and weighs 9,000 pounds ready to tow. Subtracting gives 6,000 pounds available under that combined limit. If its separate trailer rating is only 5,000 pounds, the permitted amount is still no more than 5,000 pounds, subject to the remaining limits.
Use a loaded trailer weight, not the trailer’s empty shipping weight. Water, tools, spare tires, batteries, and camping supplies all count.
What changes for a camper conversion?
Cabinets, tanks, solar equipment, occupants, and luggage consume the same capacity needed for tongue load. Weigh the finished van by axle in travel condition. A luxury interior may leave less towing flexibility than an empty cargo van with the same basic chassis.
Before departure, verify tire pressures and ratings, trailer brakes where required, lighting, coupler engagement, and safe load distribution. Follow the model-year operating instructions for towing and recovery; towing a trailer and being towed after a breakdown are separate procedures.
