Where Are Mercedes Sprinter Vans Made?

Understand where Sprinters have been built, how chassis and conversion locations differ, and how to verify a specific van’s plant through its VIN.

Sprinters have been manufactured in more than one country and plant. Production has included the Charleston-area operation in South Carolina and plants in Germany, among other market-specific arrangements. The VIN and vehicle records are the best way to identify an individual van’s origin.

Brand nationality is not assembly location

Mercedes-Benz is a German automotive brand, but that does not mean every Mercedes-Benz van sold in the United States was assembled in Germany. Manufacturers use international production networks, and the plant supplying a market can change over time.

The Sprinter historical overview describes its production history, including the Charleston-area operation. Treat historical plant information separately from a claim about every current vehicle.

How to check a specific Sprinter

Use the VIN on the vehicle and confirm it against the title and original records. The NHTSA VIN decoder can provide manufacturer-reported information for U.S.-market vehicles, including available plant details.

A dealer can help interpret the build data when a field is missing or unclear. A blank decoder field is not proof that the vehicle was assembled in a particular country.

Converted vehicles can have two production stories

The base van may be built in one location and converted elsewhere. A camper maker’s address identifies the conversion business, not necessarily the chassis assembly plant. Keep both the original vehicle and final-stage documentation.

This distinction matters when describing a vehicle as locally built or seeking warranty service. Chassis and conversion components may have separate support arrangements.

Does origin tell you which van to buy?

Assembly location alone is not a complete quality assessment. Inspect the individual vehicle, maintenance history, equipment, and conversion workmanship. Check open recalls and obtain an independent assessment for a used purchase.

If country of origin is important for a procurement requirement, use the required certification documents rather than a general blog answer. A global model name does not establish where every component or every finished example was made.
