Can Sprinter Vans Have 0 Tint?
Understand zero-percent tint, visible light transmission, front versus rear window rules, and how to check legal tint for a Sprinter van.
If “0 tint” means zero-percent visible light transmission, do not assume it is legal on a Sprinter. Zero-percent VLT is opaque, and rules vary by state, window position, and vehicle classification. If you mean no added tint, that is a different question.
Understand the percentage first
Visible light transmission, or VLT, measures the proportion of visible light passing through glass and film together. A lower number means a darker result. Five-percent film is sometimes called limo tint; it is not the same as zero-percent transmission.
Factory glass can already reduce light transmission. Adding a film with a particular advertised percentage does not mean the completed window has that same VLT. An installer should measure the combined result with appropriate equipment.
Front and rear windows may have different rules
Windshields and front side windows generally face tighter visibility restrictions than rear privacy glazing. Rules can also depend on how the vehicle is classified, its mirrors, and an applicable exemption.
For example, New York DMV’s tint guidance generally requires at least 70% light transmission through the windshield and front side windows. It describes separate rear-window conditions and an exemption process. That is a New York example, not a national Sprinter standard.
What to ask a tint installer
Provide the registration state, vehicle classification, and the windows you want treated. Request:
- The final measured VLT for each regulated window.
- Confirmation that the proposed installation meets the applicable rules.
- The film product details, warranty, and installation receipt.
- A clear distinction between tint, privacy panels, and removable parked-use shades.
If you are seeking a medical exemption, complete the jurisdiction’s approval process rather than assuming a doctor’s note automatically authorizes an installation.
Privacy without sacrificing driving visibility
A camper can often use interior shades while parked, subject to safe use and local rules. Remove anything obstructing required visibility before driving. Very dark film can make pedestrians and obstacles harder to see at night, especially when maneuvering a long van.
Before installation, verify the current requirements directly with your state DMV or enforcement authority. A seller’s claim that “all commercial vans can have any tint” is not a reliable legal basis.
